How to Shop for Nut Butter

What to look for

Whether you’re doing a Whole30 for the new year or not, shopping for quality nut butter can be difficult when you don’t know what to look for. Our advice is to look for nut butter that has only 1-2 ingredients: organic nuts, and salt if you prefer salted nut butter. We recommend avoiding nut butters that contain added oils such as palm oil or canola oil, and any added sugar. You can always scan with the free Trash Panda App to make reading labels easier.

Why No Palm Oil?

Palm oil is commonly found in nut butter as a stabilizer to prevent the nut oils from separating at the top of the jar. There are two types of palm oils to look out for: unrefined palm oil, which is pressed directly from the palm plant, and contains many vitamins and minerals, and refined palm oil, which is heavily processed, and widely used in processed foods, specifically nut butter.

Artisana Organics stays away from the use of palm oil in its products because refined palm oil used in nut butters is devoid of nutritional value and is typically processed with the chemical solvent hexane, which can be toxic when consumed.

Whole30 Approved

Not only is Artisana Organics the first and only nut butter brand to achieve R.A.W and C.L.E.A.N certifications by the Clean Food Certified Project, but they are also Whole30 Approved, so if you’re kicking off a Whole30 in January, be sure to add some to your shopping list.

What does it mean to be Whole30 approved? Whole30 approved partners are brands that contain no added sugar, real or artificial, no alcohol, no grains, no legumes, no dairy, and no carrageenan, MSG or sulfites. To be considered a Whole30 partner, the products must be made with only whole ingredients, and Artisana Organics does just that with products that are made with only R.A.W natural nuts in their spreads.
